How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 & 11
Have HEIC photos that a Windows app or upload form won’t accept? Make JPG copies using one of the methods below. Keep the originals if you need their original encoding and metadata.
Quick answer
An easy way to convert HEIC photos on Windows is a browser-based converter. Choose your HEIC or HEIF photos, convert them locally in your browser, then download JPG copies. You don’t need to install a converter app.
Your photos stay in your browser.
Method 1: Convert HEIC to JPG in your browser
HEIC photos are common on Apple devices because they store high-quality images efficiently. The format isn’t exclusive to Apple. JPG has broader compatibility with apps, websites and other devices. Apple explains HEIF, compression and compatibility.
The RST converter uses its own browser-local decoder, so you don’t need to install a Windows HEIC extension or a separate converter app.
- Open the HEIC to JPG Converter.
- Choose your HEIC or HEIF photos, or drag them from a folder. Select up to 200 photos, up to 30 MB each.
- Optionally open JPG quality & metadata. Balanced is recommended; High and Maximum prioritize quality over file size.
- Select Convert to JPG. Photos are processed one at a time; the queue shows completed files and progress.
- Use Download JPG for individual files, or Prepare ZIP download followed by the ZIP download link for a completed group.
Converting a large batch? Groups hold up to 50 JPGs or about 60 MB. One larger JPG can occupy its own group up to 90 MB. Save the group, then choose Release group & continue to free memory and convert the rest. Keep the page open: refreshing or closing it loses unsaved work. Downloads don’t start automatically.
Your originals aren’t modified. Pixel dimensions aren’t deliberately reduced, including supported 48 MP photos. Large or unusual files can still exceed browser/device limits or fail to decode; other successful files remain downloadable. Ordinary JPG output may not preserve features such as HDR color or Live Photo video.
Original HEIC metadata—including capture dates, camera details and GPS tags—is not copied into the JPG. Keep your originals if you need that information.
Method 2: Use Windows Photos or Paint
If your PC already opens the photo, a built-in app may be enough for an occasional JPG copy. Support depends on your Windows version, installed image codecs/extensions and the particular file.
- Right-click the HEIC file and try Open with → Photos or Paint.
- If it opens correctly, look for Save as, Save a copy or an export option. In Paint, look under File → Save as.
- If the app offers a file-type choice, choose JPEG/JPG and save a new file.
- Open the new JPG to check it. Keep the HEIC original.
Menu labels and export choices vary between app versions. A “Save a copy” command does not necessarily change the format. If there’s no JPEG option—or the HEIC won’t open—use the browser method above. Simply renaming .heic to .jpg does not convert the photo.
Method 3: Add HEIC/HEIF support to Windows
If you regularly need Windows apps to open HEIC files, check Microsoft’s image extensions. HEIF is the image container; HEVC is the compression used by many HEIC photos. HEIF image support alone may not supply the required HEVC decoder.
Microsoft’s Photos guidance explains the HEIF and HEVC requirements. Follow the official links and check the current Store listings for your PC’s system requirements, availability and pricing.
These components enable compatible apps to read the format. They are not, by themselves, a batch JPG converter.
Which method should I use?
On smaller screens, scroll the table sideways to compare all columns.
| Method | Best for | Installation | Batch conversion | Privacy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RST browser converter | Making JPG copies of multiple photos | No converter app or Windows codec installation | Up to 200 selected photos; bounded download groups | Photos processed locally in your browser |
| Windows Photos / Paint | Occasional single photos that already open | No separate converter app; HEIC support may be needed | Limited; usually a manual per-file workflow | Local file conversion; cloud-sync settings still apply |
| Windows HEIF support | Regularly opening HEIC in compatible Windows apps | May require HEIF / HEVC components | Not primarily a batch converter | Enables local decoding; sharing/sync settings are separate |
Windows 10 and Windows 11: what changes?
Use the same browser method on either version with a current browser that supports WebAssembly and worker canvas. It avoids relying on the Windows image codecs installed on your PC.
Built-in HEIC opening and JPEG export can differ with Windows/app versions, updates and installed extensions. If Photos or Paint behaves differently from the steps above, check its available commands rather than assuming a particular menu exists.
Why is my JPG larger than the HEIC?
HEIC generally compresses photos more efficiently than JPEG. A 3.7 MB HEIC becoming a 5 MB JPG can be normal, even if the photos look similar. Those numbers are an illustration, not a promised output size.
RST shows the original and JPG sizes and the percentage change. Balanced usually creates a smaller JPG than High or Maximum, but no setting guarantees a file smaller than the HEIC. JPEG re-encoding is lossy, even at Maximum.
Need a smaller file for an upload limit? Download the JPG, then use Image Compressor to target a measured output size. Its current limit is 10 MB per input image; check the limits before adding a large JPG.
Are online HEIC converters private?
Web converters can work differently: some upload images to a server, while others process files locally. Check the service’s processing information before selecting personal photos.
The RST HEIC to JPG Converter reads, decodes and converts photos in your browser. Image contents, filenames and generated results are not uploaded to RST servers or automatically included in feedback. It downloads its decoder code as part of the website; you don’t install a separate app.
The new JPG does not retain original HEIC metadata. That doesn’t remove personal information visible in the picture. To inspect metadata in an original photo, use Photo Metadata Viewer & Remover, which also processes files locally.
Frequently asked questions
Can Windows 11 convert HEIC to JPG?
Yes, using RST in a supported browser. Photos or Paint may also save a JPG copy if your installation can open the HEIC and offers JPEG export.
Can Windows 10 convert HEIC to JPG?
Yes. The browser method does not require Windows HEIF/HEVC extensions. Built-in app support depends on installed codecs, app versions and the file.
Do I need to download a HEIC converter?
No separate converter app is needed for RST. Your browser loads the website and its local decoder, then processes your photos on your device.
Why won’t Windows open my HEIC file?
Missing HEIF/HEVC support is one possibility. A corrupt file or unsupported HEIC variant can also fail. Check the official Microsoft guidance above, or try the browser method.
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
JPEG re-encoding can lose detail. Balanced is the recommended starting point; High and Maximum use more storage to prioritize quality. Maximum is still not lossless. Keep your HEIC originals.
Why is my JPG larger than the HEIC?
HEIC is generally more efficient at storing photos. A larger JPG can still be a valid conversion. Check the size comparison and try Balanced or Image Compressor if you need a smaller file.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?
RST accepts up to 200 photos, 30 MB each, and converts sequentially. Large batches pause at bounded output groups: save and release each group to continue. Individual failures do not discard successful JPGs.
Are my photos uploaded when I use the RST converter?
No. Conversion happens in browser memory, and downloads are saved where you choose. Clear the list, release a completed group or leave the page to free its temporary data. Original HEIC metadata is not copied into the JPG.
